Climb Mount Paku
2.7km, 4min drive
Walk to the top of Mt Paku for a stunning 360° view of the surrounding land, sea and horizon, and read about the history of extinct volcanic pyramid along the way. Follow serviced walkways from The Esplanade to the summit or drive to the base of Paku summit for a gentler hike.
Ocean Beach
2.5km (4min drive)
Beautiful golden sand surf beach with strong waves. A popular New Zealand surfing spot only minutes from Tairua town centre.
Coastal Walkway
Follow the nearby walkway along Tairua Harbour into Tairua Town Centre, and continue along Pepe Estuary. A gentle walk providing stunning mountain and estuary views.
Sailors Grave/Te Karo Bay
6.4km, 9min drive
A stunning beach 10 minutes drive north of Tairua. Visit historic grave site or hike through beautiful native bush from Sailors Grave to best-kept-secret, Otara Bay. Perfect for picnics.
Puketui Valley

For a fresh water experience drive 15 minutes south of Tairua to Tairua River. Follow trails through the Broken Hills historic mining area or enjoy a refreshing swim in the waterholes.
Pauanui Beach

Take the ferry or drive to the neighbouring resort town of Pauanui for a day of picturesque walks or relaxation at Pauanui Beach.

• Fish off the wharf just 2 minutes from the motel – Snapper, Trevally, Yellowtail Kingfish off the wharf in summer.
• Across the Tairua Bar are popular boat fishing spots: Shoe Island, Slipper Island and the Alderman Islands (local charter boats and trips available).
• Surf, swim or chill on Ocean Beach, or head to the Esplanade Beach for something more peaceful.
• Catch a ferry to the Pauanui for the Pauanui Beach (summer only).
